Hyundai produces fantastic EVs. Electric cars are a way to reduce your carbon footprint while still enjoying the same adventures with your family. However, choosing the right EV for your family in Mississippi can be challenging.

Hallmark Hyundai North is here to go over the IONIQ 5 SUV and IONIQ 6 sedan from Hyundai, and which one is right for you depends on your personal needs and lifestyle.

IONIQ 5

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a crossover SUV with a sporty body style and plenty of cargo space. It seats five and has optional all-wheel drive.

The higher-end models have a combined range of just over 300 miles, meaning they can handle any trip. They come with everything you have learned to expect from Hyundai, ranging from leather-wrapped steering wheels with audio controls to collision avoidance and lane-keeping assist.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 offers a sleek, classic sedan body on a very similar powertrain to the 5. This vehicle has a more extended range and a comfortable cabin designed for those long trips.

Specific models also have AWD.

It seats five in a conventional four-door sedan arrangement, with a decent cargo area, but less than the 5.

Performance and Horse Power

One thing worth mentioning is that both of these vehicles are essentially the same "under the body."

The engine performance is identical across both vehicles. You aren't going to get more horsepower by going with the sedan, but the lighter, more aerodynamic body gives it a longer range. The SUV's combined range is reported at 303 miles, while the sedan gets 361 miles.

This might make a difference if you do a lot of longer trips. Both charge to 80% in 18 minutes.

The prices are also very close.

For 2024, the MSRP of the base IONIQ 5 is $41,650, and for the base IONIQ 6 $38,615.

However, you will likely want the larger battery pack, which increases the price of both vehicles. This is particularly the case if you do a lot of highway driving.

Unlike internal combustion engines, EVs tend to get better energy efficiency around town than on the open road.

So which one should you choose?

It depends.

For Long Trips in Comfort

Go with the Hyundai IONIQ 6. Both cars come with a minimalist, lounge-style internal cabin, and the crossover may have more headroom for taller people.

However, the longer range means you can get that bit further before you have to look for a charger, and on long trips, that can save time. The IONIQ 6 still easily fits five people and has enough cargo space for road trip luggage.

For Lugging Stuff

If you need cargo space, you need the crossover body on the 5. It has 27.2 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats up, which increases to 59.3 if you fold them down. The IONIQ 6, in contrast, has only 11.2 cubic feet with the rear seats up. This is good for a passenger sedan, but if you routinely move sporting gear and the like, you should go with the crossover.

For the Right Appearance

If neither the range nor the cargo space makes a huge difference, then you can always resort to choosing by style. The IONIQ 5 comes in five different colors, all of which are subdued. The brightest is
Digital Teal, a soft blue. The IONIQ 6 comes in six different colors, including red and very dark green.

Do you want the sporty crossover or the classic sedan? Interior colors are also different, although the cabin design is very similar.
